Karen DeMarco, co-founder and president of the hunger-relief charity The Food Brigade, has been named to the Board of Trustees of NJ 211.
211 is a special nationally-designated telephone number used to reach information and referral services to health, human services, and social service organizations. The 211 network in the United States responds to over 21 million requests for help every year.
Here in New Jersey, NJ 211 provides live assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The services are free, confidential, and multilingual. In 2022, NJ 211 helped over 1.3 million people find health and human service resources in local communities throughout the state. In the event of a community emergency, 211 acts as a public information point for information in coordination with Emergency Management professionals.
"I'm very excited to become a part of NJ 211, and to bring my experiences on the front lines in the fight against hunger in New Jersey", DeMarco said. "Coming from the field of food security, I look forward to exploring the ways we can work to strengthen referral service to the hundreds of thousands of New Jersey residents who are in need of food assistance."
As a result of her work with The Food Brigade, DeMarco recently won the AARP 2023 Andrus Award for Community Service in New Jersey, and the national "Good Neighbor" Award in Anaheim, California in November. In 2023, The Food Brigade was named "Best Nonprofit Organization" by 201 Magazine.
"I think it's critical for a representative from the world of food security to have a voice on this board, and I'm honored to have been chosen", DeMarco added.
